Additions

An addition can be anything from a small room attached to an existing home, or a new home attached to an existing room. In either case, there’s a lot to consider. Inside and out, the new and the old should work together.  If the existing structure is slightly crooked, should the new structure match it?  (Some construction companies seem to think so.)

Knowing how to join old and new can be tricky business. For instance, some materials used in older construction aren’t even available anymore. Almost nothing can be decided without consideration for what already exists. When your contractor knocks out that old wall to connect to the new addition, you’ll probably be hoping that he knows what he is doing. You don’t want him “hoping” the same thing!

Many additions can be undertaken with minimal affect on daily living. In many cases, a major portion of the work can be done without encroaching on the existing living area.  However, at some point, the connection between old and new has to be made. This phase of the project can range anywhere from a minor inconvenience to an “ulcer maker”. Your contractor should understand and appreciate how this affects your family and help you navigate through the rough waters.

Building an addition is more than just putting up walls and connecting wires and pipes. Technical know how is essential, but it requires more than that. It is a process of moving a family from one living space to another.

Select a contractor that understands this important distinction.
